Search Egine Optimization involves a lot more than just submitting your site to the search engines and adding some keywords, it also requires many hours of work to the website itself. SEO vs SEM - Which is Better?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) are two completely separate beasts. Search Engine Marketing, or Pay-Per-Click, is an actual advertising campaign and users will show up in the sponsored links sections of the search engine. (see graphic below)

Websites that have been organically placed, or optimized, are shown in the main section of the search engines. Besides where you show up on the page, the biggest differences between the two services are time and overall cost.

Time -

  • Search Engine Optimization, or organic Search Engine Placement, can take up to a year or more to give you the results you are looking for, but your results can last a lot longer than SEM.
  • Search Engine Marketing, or Pay Per Click Placement, can be almost instantaneous in your placement, but your placement will vary depending on your budget as well as your competition.

Cost -

  • Search Engine Optimization usually requires a setup fee and monthly cost to maintain your placement.
  • Search Engine Marketing requires that you pay a fee EACH TIME a website visitor clicks on the link to visit your site. The cost per click will vary depending on the keywords you bid on. This is almost like an auction where, if you are outbid by a competitor, your placement within the sponsored links will drop. Also, if your budget runs out, your placement immediately goes away.
